My name is Keeton Crowe and today I’m interviewing Sarah Fly, who is a current senior at Centre College. I’m here with Sarah and myself, Sarah is located in Danville on Campus and I am in Lexington. Today is January 25th, 2021 and today we will be discussing Sarah’s experiences on Centre’s campus. So, Sarah, introduce yourself.

Sarah Fly 0:27
Hello, I’m Sarah Fly. I’m a senior here at Centre, and I’m from Nashville, Tennessee.

Keeton Crowe 0:32
And what’s your major?

Sarah Fly 0:34
I’m an English major and an education minor.

Keeton Crowe 0:37
Gotcha. Okay, so can you tell us a little bit about some of the paranormal experiences that you’ve had on campus or if anythings happened that you can’t really explain, anything like that.

Sarah Fly 0:49
Yeah, so, I have a couple. So, my freshman year I lived in Evans Hall and I had those Christmas or fairy lights or whatever you want to call them, and sometimes… I think it was during Centre Term of my freshman year ‘cause I remember the weather being just really really dark and so that’s what made it even worse. Sometimes they would just flicker on and off and sometimes they would just turn off in the middle of the day. And I checked all of the outlets and my roommate and I made sure everything was plugged in, nothing was messing with it but just all throughout Centre Term they would just… turn on and off. (1:21) Also, I had a teammate that lived in Evans her freshman year, so when I moved in she was telling me about some sketchy stuff that happened in the bathroom which… can’t really be explained? The lights would also flicker and I don’t know if that’s just bad, like, electrical work but I don’t think it is because they would flicker and then just stop. It wasn’t… there wasn’t any consistency or anything. (1:42) I also work in the Residence Life Office which is right by, uh, Breckinridge Hall which is where all of the ghost stories come from. And a lot of times I have to go in there and like, hang up signs and… I don’t know, it’s just really eerie.

Keeton Crowe (1:53)
Just like, an unsettling thing… like, you feel like you’re not by yourself?

Sarah Fly (1:57)
Yeah. I think it was my sophomore year, one of my friends lived in Breck and I spent the night there a couple of times… I didn’t like it at all. Everything just felt off, especially at night and the hallways are really sketchy too. I would hear a noise… turn around, nothing.

Keeton Crowe (2:17)
Okay, so after all of those things happened to you, do you think it kind of shaped how you view Centre’s campus? Say you’re by yourself, how do you feel on campus knowing that something scary has happened to you before?

Sarah Fly (2:36)
Yeah, I don’t think it’s changed too much, and I think we’ll talk about this later but like, my view on ghosts and ghost stories… In Franklin, Tennessee there’s a ghost tour you can go around downtown ‘cause that’s where some civil war battles happened so that’s kind of sketchy, but I don’t think that those experiences changed how I feel about Centre because I’m not scared of ghosts… like, they creep me out but I’m not scared of them. So, I don’t think that changed my view on Centre at all.

Keeton Crowe (3:04)
Okay, let’s see… are there any places on campus that are really important to you and give you a sense of comfort and happiness and like… is there a place that doesn’t make you feel scared or a place that makes you feel really at home?

Sarah Fly (3:26)
Um… well, one, the softball field and facility. Like, I love being down there and it backs up to the Harlem Nights… I don’t know if you know what that is but it’s basically a club I think so that place gets pretty scary at night but I still love it and feel safe there. Also, in Young, those study areas where the printers and whiteboards are. I like those places. I feel like I should be scared in Young but I’m not, I feel safe in there.

Keeton Crowe (3:54)
Did you know there’s a ghost in Young?

Sarah Fly (3:57)
There is?

Keeton Crowe (3:59)
Yeah (laughter)

Sarah Fly (4:01)
Okay… is it a nice ghost?

Keeton Crowe (4:02)
I guess, some guy died when they were building young and Dr. Egge was telling us a story about how he messes with the lights and he’ll turn them off and on which is… kind of similar to your situation (laughter).

Sarah Fly (4:29)
Great, thanks (laughter).

Keeton Crowe (4:33)
Okay, so, softball field and Young… what you mentioned earlier, what do you think about ghost stories and ghosts in general and how do you perceive all of that?

Sarah Fly (4:43)
I don’t know, I’ve watched all of those paranormal shows and peoples experiences and I just feel like there’s too much evidence for some of it not to be real, y’know? Like there’s no way none of that happened. I believe in ghost stories but I don’t think that ghosts could hurt me. I do see validity in ghost stories. Does that answer the question?

Keeton Crowe (5:11)
Yeah, and I guess a follow-up question. You know how in social media and things like that there’s like… witch TikTok and Spiritual TikTok and mediums and stuff like that? Like, how do you feel about those and do you think they’re connected to the paranormal?

Sarah Fly (5:28)
See, I’ve always had a hard time with this but since I’ve been on TikTok and seen all of this witchery stuff, if that many people do it it can’t really be fake? They always talk about good spirits and bad spirits and one of the movies I always draw back from is Hereditary and those are like, very bad spirits. Um, but I’m not sure… I don’t know where I stand on if like, witch stuff is connected to bad spirits or good spirits but I do think they’re connected to the ghost if that makes sense… I don’t know (laughter).

Keeton Crowe (6:10)
No, that makes sense! Um, we were talking in class about how the media kind of switches your perception of ghosts and aliens and stuff.

Sarah Fly (6:24)
Yeah, I feel like unless it happened to me, well… I don’t know, ‘cause I believe in it but until it happens to me I won’t like, really believe in it you know?

Keeton Crowe (6:36)
Do you think that what happened to you on campus in New Quad kind of like, elevated your belief a little bit?

Sarah Fly (6:43)
Yeah, because it wasn’t, like, the full on paranormal experience like I saw a ghost but just eerie stuff that shouldn’t have happened but did so I feel like that definitely changed where I stood on it. It made me believe in it a little more.

Keeton Crowe (6:55)

Like, just the feeling you got, I guess?

Sarah Fly (6:57)
Yes… it’s just weird to think about spirits just like, being around you but while you’re living and… I don’t know.

Keeton Crowe (7:03)
Yeah, I don’t love thinking about it all the time because it’s like… ew.

Keeton Crowe (7:19)
I meant to ask you this a little earlier, but what does a typical day for you on campus look like and did that experience alter it at all?

Sarah Fly (7:31)
I don’t think it altered at all, I mean, if it changed anything it might be me showering a little earlier so I don’t have to be in the dark. But my day today on campus was go to class, eat, go to work, homework, softball, eat, homework… repeat. So I don’t think it changed my day to day but I do think it altered how I do things and how I think about things, I guess.

Keeton Crowe (7:58)
One question I wanted to ask you is if you think… like, I know you work in Residence Life and Ann Young is like, very well known for her ghost stories and how she was involved in Breck. Do you think there’s truth to a lot of what Ann is saying or do you think a lot of it is Centre folklore that’s kind of just been fabricated as time goes on?

Sarah Fly (8:28)
Um, yeah… I’ve thought about that a lot because after my freshman year when we were thinking about where to live next she had told me stuff and I feel like hearing her stories have kind of changed my perspective a little bit because it’s one thing to have an upperclassmen tell you “hey, there’s a ghost in Breck” but to have someone who’s worked here for thirty, forty years tell you that’s kind of different because I feel like she wouldn’t do that just for the fun of it, you know?

Keeton Crowe (8:55)
Yeah, she wouldn’t lie. Okay, I think that’s all I have… thank you, Sarah!

Sarah Fly (9:00)
Of course! Good luck with your paper!
